What metal tube and fittings do you stock?

304 stainless steel 45 and 90 degree elbows from 13mm to 102mm outside diameter with 150mm legs, and T6063 aluminium 45, 90, 135 and 180 degree elbows, beaded and unbeaded straight joiners, T-pieces and hose connectors from 8mm to 102mm - plus mini fuel hose clips in singles, 10 and 100 packs to suit the smaller bores.

Why choose stainless over aluminium?

Corrosion resistance and strength. 304 stainless shrugs off salt, coolant and road spray without any coating and takes a far better polish, which makes it the choice for marine work and visible pipework. Aluminium is lighter, cheaper and sheds heat faster, which suits charge air pipework. Both are rated -40C to +220C and can be mixed in one system.

What grade of stainless is it?

304 - an iron, chromium and nickel alloy and the standard corrosion-resistant grade for this kind of work. It is supplied polished, which is both cosmetic and practical: a polished surface is easier to keep clean and gives corrosion less to take hold on. For heavy salt immersion, 316 is the higher grade, so tell us if that is your application.

How do I size these?

Order by outside diameter, because that is the dimension your hose or coupler slides over. Match it to the internal diameter of the silicone or rubber hose you are using. Measure with vernier callipers rather than a tape - a millimetre matters here, and a joint that is a size out will not seal however hard you clamp it.

Can I cut and weld them?

Yes. Cut with a fine-tooth blade or abrasive cut-off wheel and deburr both inside and outside - a sharp internal edge will score the hose bore and start a leak. 304 TIG welds well with the right filler; purge the inside of the joint for a clean root. Aluminium T6063 also welds, with some softening of the heat-affected zone.

How do I join them into a system?

Slide silicone or rubber coupling hose over the leg and clamp it. That is how most intake and charge air systems are assembled, and the flexible joints also absorb engine movement and vibration that a welded system would transmit. T-bolt clamps on anything pressurised, stainless worm drive clips on coolant and low-pressure runs.
