Rubber LPG Hose

Orange high pressure LPG hose is a type of hose used for the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), such as propane or butane. What is orange LPG hose used for?

It carries liquefied petroleum gas - propane or butane - from a cylinder or tank to an appliance. Typical uses are patio heaters, barbecues, catering equipment, caravans and motorhomes, forklift and plant fuel systems, and industrial burners. The orange colour is a standard identification for LPG so the line cannot be confused with any other hose in a bundle.

What standard is it made to?

ISO 3821, which is the international standard for rubber hoses used with gas welding and allied processes and for LPG. It is constructed with an oil-resistant synthetic rubber inner layer and is date stamped. Buying a certified, date-stamped hose matters a great deal here - it is the only way to know when the hose was made and therefore when it is due for replacement.

What sizes and lengths do you supply?

Internal diameters from 5mm to 13mm, cut to order from 1 metre up to a 100 metre full coil. 8mm (5/16 inch) is the size that matches the nozzle on our low-pressure regulators. Measure the outlet nozzle on your regulator and the inlet on your appliance and match the hose bore to it.

Why is the hose date stamped and when should I replace it?

LPG hose degrades with age even when it looks perfectly sound, which is why every certified hose carries a date. Replace it at the interval marked on the hose or specified by the appliance manufacturer - commonly five years, but check yours. If there is no legible date, replace it now. Also replace immediately if you see cracking, softening, kinks or damage.

Rubber or PVC LPG hose - which should I choose?

Rubber to ISO 3821 is the more flexible and more durable option, especially in cold weather where PVC stiffens, and it copes better with repeated coiling and handling. PVC LPG hose is flame resistant, rated to 20 bar, and is a cost-effective choice for a static installation. For anything that gets moved, coiled or used outdoors in winter, choose rubber.

How do I connect it?

Push it fully onto the regulator nozzle and appliance spigot and secure with an appropriate gas hose clip at each end - never rely on a push fit. Then leak-test every joint with soapy water before use. Cut the hose square and only as long as you need: excess hose lying about is a trip and damage hazard.
