Worm Drive Hose Clamps

Hose clips and clamps are devices used to attach and secure a hose onto a fitting, such as a barb or nipple. They are typically made from metal, such as stainless steel or galvanized steel, and are designed to tightly grip the hose and fitting in order to prevent the hose from slipping off or leaking. Hose clips and clamps are used in a wide range of applications, including automotive, industrial, and domestic settings.

There are several different types of hose clips and clamps available, each with its own unique characteristics and uses. For example, worm drive hose clips are commonly used in automotive and industrial applications because they are easy to install and provide a strong, secure connection. These clips feature a screw-like design that tightens around the hose and fitting as the screw is turned, creating a tight seal. Another popular type of hose clip is the T-bolt clamp, which uses a bolt and nut system to clamp the hose onto a fitting. T-bolt clamps are often used in high-pressure applications because they can provide a very strong and secure connection.

In terms of technical characteristics, hose clips and clamps are typically rated for use at specific pressure and temperature ranges. For example, a hose clip may be rated for use at pressures up to 100 pounds per square inch (PSI) and temperatures up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to choose the right type of hose clip or clamp for the specific application in order to ensure that the connection is secure and able to withstand the expected operating conditions.

What is a worm drive clip?

The standard hose clamp - a slotted steel band tightened by a screw that engages the slots. It is the general-purpose choice for coolant, water and low-pressure air, and is what most original-equipment hose joints use. Ours are built to DIN 3017 with a 12mm band, 0.8mm thick, and a 7mm hex head.

What sizes do you stock?

18 adjustment ranges from 9mm to 12mm right up to 135mm to 165mm, in W1 zinc plated and W4 stainless, in singles, 10 packs, 100 packs and assorted boxes. Size to the outside diameter of the hose once fitted, aiming for the middle of the clip's range rather than either extreme.

W1 or W4?

W4 stainless for anything exposed to weather, coolant, road salt or damp - which covers most engine bay and outdoor work. W1 zinc plated is cheaper and fine for dry indoor use. A seized clip in an awkward position costs far more in labour than the clip did, so stainless is usually the sensible choice.

When is a worm drive not the right clip?

On boost, intercooler and turbo pipework. A worm drive concentrates its force near the screw housing and its perforated band can bite into soft silicone. A T-bolt clamp applies even pressure right round the joint with a smooth inner band and holds tension far better through heat cycling. Use a T-bolt there.

How tight should it be?

Firm, not crushed. Compress the hose evenly against the pipe without the band cutting in - over-tightening causes more leaks than under-tightening. Re-check after the first few heat cycles: a new joint beds in and a clip that felt tight cold often needs a small nip afterwards.

Where should the clip sit?

Squarely over the section of hose that is supported by the pipe stub underneath, never overhanging the hose end and never on the curve of an elbow. If the pipe has a bead or barb, position the clip so the hose is pulled down behind it - that is what stops the joint blowing off under pressure.
