What is a T-bolt clamp?

A heavy-duty clamp where a solid bolt and trunnion pull a wide, smooth-inner band evenly around the whole joint. That is fundamentally different from a worm drive, which tightens through slots in a perforated band at one point - and it is why the T-bolt is the right part for pressurised joints.

When do I need one?

Boost, intercooler and turbo pipework, any joint seeing pressure pulses, and anywhere with heavy vibration. Also on soft silicone in larger bores, where a perforated worm drive band can bite into the hose. For coolant and low-pressure air, a worm drive is perfectly adequate and cheaper.

What sizes do you stock?

23 adjustment ranges from 17mm to 19mm up to 122mm to 130mm, with 18-24mm band widths and M5, M6 or M8 heads depending on size, in W1 zinc plated and W4 stainless. Available singly, in 10 and 100 packs, and in assorted boxes from 46 up to 210 clamps.

How do I size one?

Size to the outside diameter of the hose once fitted over the pipe, not the bore, and aim for the middle of the adjustment range. A clamp at the end of its travel either will not close or has very little thread engaged, and that is where boost joints let go.

Why does the smooth inner band matter?

Because silicone is soft. A perforated worm drive band presses its slot edges into the hose wall under high clamping force, which marks and eventually damages it. A T-bolt's smooth inner band spreads the load evenly, so you can apply the force a boost joint needs without cutting the hose.

How tight should it be?

Firm and even - compress the hose against the pipe without crushing it. T-bolts generate a lot of force, so it is easy to over-tighten a silicone hose. Re-check after the first few heat cycles, since the joint beds in and the clamp will usually need a small nip afterwards.
