What makes a clamp adjustable?

A worm drive clip tightens by a screw engaging slots in the band, so it covers a range of diameters rather than one fixed size - for example 9mm to 12mm. That means one clip suits a spread of hose sizes, and it can be loosened and refitted repeatedly, which a crimped or spring clip cannot.

What sizes do you stock?

18 adjustment ranges from 9mm to 12mm right up to 135mm to 165mm, built to DIN 3017 with a 12mm band, 0.8mm thick and a 7mm hex head, in W1 zinc plated and W4 stainless. Available in 10 packs, 100 packs and assorted boxes.

How do I pick the right range?

Size to the outside diameter of the hose once fitted over the pipe, not the bore, and aim for the middle of the clip's range. A clip at the very end of its travel either will not close far enough or has almost no thread engaged, which is where the failures happen.

How tight should it be?

Firm, not crushed. Compress the hose evenly against the pipe without the band biting in - over-tightening causes more leaks than under-tightening does. Re-check after the first few heat cycles, because a new joint beds in and a clip that felt tight when cold often needs a small nip.

Where should the clip sit?

Squarely over the section of hose supported by the pipe stub underneath, never overhanging the hose end and never on the curve of an elbow. If the pipe has a bead or barb, position the clip so the hose is pulled down behind it - that is what stops a joint blowing off under pressure.

When should I use something else?

On boost, intercooler and turbo pipework, use a T-bolt clamp. A worm drive concentrates its force near the screw housing and its perforated band can bite into soft silicone, and it creeps loose under heat cycling. On small-bore fuel and vacuum lines, use mini clips instead.
