What is a 90 degree reducing elbow for?

It turns a right-angled corner and steps between two different pipe diameters in a single part. That means one joint instead of two, one pair of clips instead of two, less length used up in a tight space, and less turbulence. It is the standard solution where an intercooler or intake run has to make a hard turn and change diameter at the same point.

What size combinations do you stock?

43 pairings, from 16mm to 13mm up to 127mm to 90mm, in black, red and blue, each with 150mm legs and 300mm total length. Order by the two internal diameters, matched to the outside diameters of the two pipe stubs. Measure the pipes themselves with callipers - measuring an old hose that has stretched is the usual cause of a wrong order.

Which end goes on which pipe?

The larger bore end goes on the larger pipe. Sizes are quoted large to small, so 51mm to 38mm has one end for a 51mm pipe and one for a 38mm pipe. Dry-fit before you clamp anything - a 90 degree elbow fitted the wrong way round will not reach, and it is easy to make that mistake working blind.

Will a 90 degree bend restrict flow?

Any bend costs a little flow, but a moulded 90 degree elbow costs far less than the alternative of kinking a straight hose round the same corner, which closes the bore up dramatically. The elbow keeps the bore round through the bend. If you have the space to use two 45 degree elbows in a sweep instead, that flows marginally better - but a moulded 90 is the practical answer in tight routing.

What is it rated for?

SAE J20 R3, 3 and 4 ply depending on size, with a smooth extruded silicone inner layer, polyester braid reinforcement and a silicone outer layer. Same temperature and pressure capability as the rest of our standard silicone range. It is not suitable for fuel or oil - standard silicone swells in contact with hydrocarbons.

What clips do I need?

Two different sizes, one for each end, sized to the fitted outside diameter rather than the bore. Ordering a matching pair is the classic reducer mistake. For boost and intercooler joints use T-bolt clamps, which apply even force and hold tension through heat cycles; stainless worm drive clips are fine for coolant.
