Size Guide

Measurements are nominal and may vary slightly.

How to size a clip

hose OD clip band pipe clip size = hose OD = bore + (2 × wall)
1
Measure over the hose, not the pipe
A clip closes around the outside of the hose once the hose is already on its fitting. That outside diameter is the clip size — the bore the hose runs on is not.
2
Or work it out from the hose's own figures
If the hose is not to hand, take its internal diameter and add twice the wall thickness — both are listed in that hose's own Size Guide. A 19 mm bore silicone hose has a 4.5 mm wall, so it measures 28 mm across the outside.
3
Use vernier calipers, keep the largest reading
Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the assembled joint and rotate 60° between readings. Hose is soft and rarely perfectly round, so size to the biggest figure.
4
Match the size to your figure
These are listed at a nominal diameter rather than a span, so choose the size that matches the outside of the hose you are holding — round up if you land between two.
Size the clip to the hose OD, not the bore. A 19 mm hose does not take a 19 mm clip — with a 4.5 mm wall it measures about 28 mm across the outside. Every figure on this page is the outside diameter the clip closes on.

Assorted Rubbed Lined P-Clips

What is a P-clip for?

Mounting and supporting a hose, pipe or cable against a panel or bracket so it cannot chafe or vibrate. It is not a hose clamp - it does not seal a joint. It stops the run moving, which is what prevents a hose wearing through against a bracket.

Why does the rubber lining matter?

Because a bare metal clip cuts into whatever it holds. The lining cushions the hose or cable, spreads the clamping load and absorbs vibration. On braided hose and fuel lines it is essential - a bare clip on braided hose will damage the braid.

What sizes do you stock?

Available in 2 of each - 20 clips, 5 of each - 50 clips and 10 of each - 100 clips. Size to the outside diameter of the hose or cable you are supporting.

How far apart should I fit them?

As a rule of thumb, every 300mm or so on a long run, and always close to either side of a bend or a fitting. The aim is that the run cannot move enough to touch anything or to load its own end fittings.

Can I use them on fuel and brake lines?

Yes, and it is exactly what they are for. A fuel or brake line rubbing against a bracket or panel is a serious failure waiting to happen, and it is one of the most common findings on an older vehicle.

How tight should they be?

Firm enough to stop the run moving, not so tight that the rubber is squashed flat or the pipe deformed. On a hard pipe, over-tightening can dent the tube; on a hose it can restrict the bore. You are locating the run, not clamping a joint.
