How to measure ID

Measure the pipe, not the old hose
Heat and age make a used hose swell and go out of round. Take your reading across the metal outlet the hose slides onto — that measurement is your ID.

Use vernier calipers
Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the pipe. A tape measure round a curve reads low by a millimetre or two — enough to buy the wrong size.

Take three readings, keep the largest
Rotate 60° between each. If they disagree the pipe is oval; size to the biggest figure so the hose still seals.

Round to the nearest listed bore
Never go up: a bore wider than the fitting will not grip, whatever the hose is made of. If you land between listed sizes take the smaller bore, and secure it with a clip.
Order by ID, always. Every hose on this site is listed by internal diameter. OD is given for clearance only — it changes with wall thickness and ply count, so it is never the ordering size. On reducers, quote both ends, largest first.

Rubber Vacuum Air Brake Servo Hose

What is it used for?

Vacuum lines feeding a brake servo, and pneumatic control lines in commercial vehicle braking systems. Both need a hose that will not collapse under negative pressure.

What size and length do I order?

Order by internal diameter, matched to the outside diameter of the pipe stub or spigot it slides over. Measure the pipe with vernier callipers rather than the old hose, which stretches in service and reads large. Available in internal diameters from 9.5mm to 13mm, lengths from 1 Metre to 50 Metres (Full Coil). Full coils work out considerably better value per metre than cut lengths.

What standard is it built to?

It is manufactured to BSAU110. Buying to a recognised standard matters here - it means the construction, pressure rating and performance have been benchmarked rather than simply described.

Can I use it for fuel or oil?

No - EPDM and general-purpose rubber have poor resistance to hydrocarbons and will soften, swell and eventually fail. For fuel and oil use our SAE J30 R6 rubber hose or a fluorosilicone-lined silicone hose.

Why can't I use ordinary rubber hose here?

Because a servo line runs under vacuum, not pressure. Ordinary hose without adequate wall reinforcement slowly draws shut, and a partially collapsed servo hose gives a hard pedal that comes and goes - a dangerous and very hard fault to diagnose.

How should it be secured?

Proper hose clips, one at each end, positioned squarely over the barb or spigot. Support long runs with rubber-lined P-clips so the hose cannot chafe against a bracket, panel or wiring loom, and keep it clear of exhaust components.
