How to size a clip

Measure over the hose, not the pipe

A clip closes around the outside of the hose once the hose is already on its fitting. That outside diameter is the clip size — the bore the hose runs on is not.

Or work it out from the hose's own figures

If the hose is not to hand, take its internal diameter and add twice the wall thickness — both are listed in that hose's own Size Guide. A 19 mm bore silicone hose has a 4.5 mm wall, so it measures 28 mm across the outside.

Use vernier calipers, keep the largest reading

Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the assembled joint and rotate 60° between readings. Hose is soft and rarely perfectly round, so size to the biggest figure.

Pick the range that spans your figure

Aim for the middle of a clip's range rather than either end. Wound out near its limit a clip has little thread left to bite on; at the bottom of its range it may not open far enough to pass over the hose in the first place.

Size the clip to the hose OD, not the bore. A 19 mm hose does not take a 19 mm clip — with a 4.5 mm wall it measures about 28 mm across the outside. Every figure on this page is the outside diameter the clip closes on.

What is in the pack?

One hundred mini worm drive clips, all the same size and material, for small bore fuel, oil, air and water hose. The band is 9mm wide and 0.6mm thick with rolled edges so it grips without cutting into the hose.

Who is the 100 pack for?

Workshops, restorers, boatyards and production work - anywhere the same small clip gets used week in, week out. Buying the box is considerably cheaper per clip than singles and means you are never short mid-job.

What sizes do you stock?

Clamping ranges from 7-9mm up to 18-20mm. Size to the outside diameter of the hose once it is pushed onto the pipe, not to the hose bore. The box is a single size, so check the range before ordering.

What is the difference between W1 and W4?

W1 is zinc plated steel and W4 is stainless. Use W4 for anything exposed to fuel, coolant, weather or road salt. W1 is the cheaper choice for dry indoor and enclosed work.

What temperature will it take?

-60C to +180C, with peaks to +190C. That covers engine bay work comfortably, including the heat soak a fuel line sees after shutdown.

How tight should it be?

Firm, not crushed. Compress the hose evenly against the pipe and stop - over-tightening a mini clip on soft hose causes more leaks than under-tightening. Re-check after the first heat cycle.
