What is rubber radiator hose used for?

Carrying coolant between the engine and radiator, and around the cooling system generally. It is EPDM rubber with a smooth internal bore for efficient flow and a reinforced wall, built to SAE J20 R3 - the specification used for virtually all original-equipment coolant hose.

What sizes and lengths do you supply?

25 sizes from 5mm to 102mm internal diameter, cut to order from 1 metre up to a 20 metre full coil. Order by internal diameter matched to the outside diameter of the pipe stub - and measure the pipe with callipers, not the old hose, which stretches in service.

What is it rated for?

-30C to +120C, glycol rated for standard antifreeze mixes, built to SAE J20 R3. That covers automotive, marine, agricultural and industrial cooling systems. It is not suitable for fuel or oil - hydrocarbons attack EPDM and it will soften and swell.

How do I know when it needs replacing?

Squeeze it. Hard and brittle, or spongy and swollen, both mean it is done. Look for surface cracking when you flex it, and crusty residue or staining round the clips indicating seepage. Replace on condition - coolant hose failures are sudden and always badly timed.

Can I bend it round a corner?

Only gently. Bending a straight hose too tightly closes up the bore, restricts coolant flow and creates a stress point that will split eventually. For a real change of direction use a moulded elbow - we stock rubber 45 and 90 degree elbows from 10mm to 76mm.

Why does my lower hose collapse?

Because the water pump pulls a partial vacuum on the suction side, and a long unsupported hose can draw shut. The answer is a wire reinforced hose, which has a steel helix in the wall to hold the bore open. We stock it in 13mm to 51mm.
