It is a general-purpose flexible hose with a steel wire helix moulded into the wall, which means it resists crushing and will not collapse under suction. That makes it suitable for pond and water feature plumbing, pump suction and delivery, and for air, dust and fume extraction in workshops. Unlike layflat hose, which collapses under any negative pressure, this hose holds its bore open under vacuum, so it works on both the suction and discharge sides of a pump. That makes it the right choice for pond pumps, transfer pumps and vacuum or extraction duties.

Internal diameters from 19mm up to 51mm, cut to order from 1 metre up to a 50 metre full coil. Measure the outside diameter of the pump or filter spigot you are connecting to and match it to the hose internal diameter. Buying a full coil is significantly better value per metre if you have a long run or several connections to make.

Clear lets you see flow and spot blockages or air locks, which is genuinely useful on pump and extraction work. Black is the better choice for anything exposed to daylight in a pond or water feature, because blocking the light stops algae growing inside the hose. If the run is buried, boxed in or indoors, either is fine and it comes down to preference.

The operating range is -10C to +65C. It is UV resistant, so it copes with outdoor installation, and the PVC construction resists kinking and cracking in normal service. Push the hose onto the spigot - warming the hose end in hot water for a minute makes this far easier on the larger sizes - then secure it with a stainless worm drive clip over the barb. Always clip both ends, even on a gravity return, because a hose that works loose in a pond can empty it. Stainless clips are worth the small extra cost outdoors; plated clips will rust.
