    Scrim Foam Backed Black Faux Leather

    1.5 Metre Wide By The Metre Foam Backed

    What is it?
    Black faux leather with a scrim foam backing, sold by the metre for vehicle and furniture trim work. The foam gives it a soft, padded feel and the scrim layer behind it keeps the material stable so it does not stretch out of shape as you work.

    What size do I get?
    1.5 metres wide, cut to the length you order - from 1 metre upwards. Order a continuous length rather than several shorter pieces if you can, because joins in trim always show.

    What is it used for?
    Door cards, headlining, panels, seat facings, dashboards, speaker boxes and general upholstery. The foam backing is what makes it suit panel work - it hides minor imperfections in the substrate underneath.

    How much do I need?
    Measure each panel, add 50 to 75mm all round for wrapping and trimming, and lay the pieces out on the 1.5 metre width before ordering. Allow extra if the material has a direction to it or you want the grain running the same way across adjacent panels.

    What adhesive should I use?
    A high-temperature contact spray adhesive - we stock Trimfix and our own Ultra Adhesive in 500ml. Ordinary craft glue will let go the first time a car sits in the sun, which is how headlinings end up on people's heads.

    How do I fit it?
    Work at room temperature, spray both surfaces, let the adhesive tack off, then lay it from the centre outwards. Stretch it gently over curves rather than pulling it tight, and trim with a sharp blade once it has grabbed - a blunt blade drags the foam.
