How to measure ID

Measure the pipe, not the old hose

Heat and age make a used hose swell and go out of round. Take your reading across the metal outlet the hose slides onto — that measurement is your ID.

Use vernier calipers

Set the outer jaws across the widest point of the pipe. A tape measure round a curve reads low by a millimetre or two — enough to buy the wrong size.

Take three readings, keep the largest

Rotate 60° between each. If they disagree the pipe is oval; size to the biggest figure so the hose still seals.

Round to the nearest listed bore

Never go up: a bore wider than the fitting will not grip, whatever the hose is made of. If you land between listed sizes take the smaller bore, and secure it with a clip.

Order by ID, always. Every hose on this site is listed by internal diameter. OD is given for clearance only — it changes with wall thickness and ply count, so it is never the ordering size. On reducers, quote both ends, largest first.

What is it, and what does it fit?

A 3 ply reinforced silicone blanking cap for the oil cooler take-off on the Land Rover TD5 engine, as fitted to the Discovery 2 and Defender. Listed against OE part number PYB500040.

How is it different from the standard blanking plug?

It is 3 ply reinforced rather than plain silicone, so it is noticeably thicker and stronger than most caps offered for this job. It measures 18mm and goes on as a deliberately tight fit.

Does it come with a clip?

Yes - a jubilee clip is included if you want to secure it further. The fit is tight enough to hold on its own, but on a port carrying hot oil under pressure we would always fit the clip.

Why blank the oil cooler take-off?

Usually because the oil cooler or its lines have been removed, rerouted or are being deleted during an engine change or rebuild. Capping the port properly is the difference between a tidy job and an oil leak over the chassis.

Will reinforced silicone stand up to hot oil?

Yes - this is oil-side silicone built to SAE J20 R3, and reinforcement is exactly what you want on a blanked port, because it is holding pressure with nothing behind it to support the wall.
